McGee Project Status As of September 24, 2004

McGee Project -- Running Commentary

[Sep 7, 2004]
The final results of A.McGee continue to indicate no close relationship of any other McGee tested so far. It is encouraged to have other distant known cousins of this line be tested.

[Aug 29, 2004]
The 43 marker result for John McGee-TN#2 line exactly matches that of John McGee-TN#1 line. This test is through descendants of two different sons of John McGee, so it pretty well confirms the 43 marker haplotype of John McGee (1751-1820).

Other results posted since the last update include partial results for A.McGee. The middle panel of the 37 marker test remains to be completed, but the initial results show that this line is not a close relationship to any of the other McGee lines tested so far. We don't have the ancestry information for this line yet.

[Aug 14, 2004]
The final 12 of 25 markers for the John O. McGehee#2 line test matches exactly the same set of markers for John O. McGehee#1 line. All 25 markers match exactly. This test provides support of the paper genealogy. There is a mismatch of 1 on the CDYa marker (part of the 37 marker test) between the John O. McGehee#1 test and the modal McGehee haplotype. An upgrade to a 37 marker test for the John O. McGehee#2 test might show whether the CDYa difference existed before or after the common ancestor of William Iverson McGhee between the lines.

The final 12 of 25 markers for the James McGhee line matches exactly the same set of markers for the John C. McGee line. All 25 markers match exactly. James McGhee is the grandson of John C. McGee. Both DNA donors descend through the James McGhee line and this test provides support of the genealogy. An upgrade to 37 markers would help to show the actual haplotype of James McGhee; if all 37 markers match then it is very likely that James McGhee had that same haplotype.

[Aug 11, 2004]
The final 12 of 37 markers for Joseph McGee strengthen the relationship with James P. McGee, introducing only one mismatch between the two sets for a genetic distance of 1 over the 37 markers. The Joseph McGee has the most common set of markers for the McGehee lines that have been tested, making it match 37/37 the McGehee modal haplotype.

The final 12 of 37 markers of the James McGee#1 line strengthen and confirm the relationship with James McGee#2 line, introducing only one mismatch between the two sets for a genetic distance of 1 over the 37 markers.

The initial results of 12 markers for the John O. McGehee#2 line is consistent with those of the John O. McGehee#1 line, helping to confirm the paper trail for this line. The remaining 13 markers of the 25 marker test are still pending.

[July 27, 2004]
The initial 12 markers (of 25) for the James McGhee (1780-1850) line is consistent with most of the other McGee lines, more markers are required for differentiation. This James McGhee is the same James McGhee listed as the son of Davis S. McGhee, the John Calvin McGee line. The 12 markers between the two descendants of this line match 12/12.

The final 12 markers (26-37) of the John O. McGehee line are consistent with the first 25 markers regarding the relationship to the James Pyrant McGee line. These lines match 24/25 for the firs sets, and 34/37 on the full 37 marker panel. Since the last twelve markers have a higher mutation rate than most of the other markers, this difference is consistent with the earlier match.

The final panel (13-25) of the 37 marker test for John Magee includs one additional mismatches with most of the close lines, but does not change the existing likely relationships. The genetic distance on the 37 marker test with James McGee of TN is three, indicating the lines are related.

The final panel (13-25) of the 37 marker test for John McGee of SC matches exactly with the James McGee brothers of KY and MO and 12/13 with John McGee of TN. The 37 markers match 4/37 with both these lines.

The final panel of the 37 marker test for James McGee #2 came somewhat as a surprise. What had been a 1/25 distance with the John McGee of TN line, now becomes a 6/37 distance. However, the John Magee/Patrick Magee line matches 2/24 with the middle panel of the 37 marker test still being processed. Since the third panel seems to be much more volatile than the other two panels, there is a good chance that John Magee will maintain a reasonably close relationship with the James McGee line when the full 37 marker test is complete.

The new infinite allele method of calculating genetic distance for YCA-IIa/b reduces the genetic distance between some of the lines. This marker has a tendancy to mutate by several values at a time, so what used to be a difference of four (between 19 and 23) is now a distance of one. The John McGee of TN, the John McGee of SC, and the John and William Magee lines have a shorter genetic distance with the Zera McGhee / John C. McGee lines than with the old method.

The remaining of the 25 markers for James McGee #2 match exactly the 25 markers for James McGee #1 which is consistent with the genealogy. This result also indicates a very likely close relationship with the John McGee line of Tennessee, having a genetic distance of one.

The partial result of 24 markers, out of the 37 ordered, for John McGee of SC indicates a possible relationship with the James McGee line (a distance of one for only 12 markers) and with the John McGee of TN line (a distance of three over 24 markers). This same potential relationship holds for all the McGee lines in the top half of the chart. The remaining markers will help sort out the relationships. This test indicates there is not a close relationship with the McGehee lines.

R.McGhee's 37 allele final results (John Calvin McGee's line) indicate an exact match with the Zera McGhee and David Magee lines from the Sorenson database. There are 26 common markers between the two tests, so the match is 26/26 alleles. This shows a definite relationship between these lines.

Fr.Magee's 24 allele (still waiting on the remaining 13) results (John Magee's line) indicates that there is not a close relationship to any of the tested lines, with the closest genetic distance being five, to the John McGee of TN line.

J.McGhee's 25 allele results (the John O. McGehee line) indicate a probable close relationship with three other lines associated with the McGehee name. This line has a distance of one from the lines associated with James Pyrant McGee and Joseph McGhee, and a distance of two with the Eli McGehee line.

S.McGee's 25 allele results (James Pyrant McGee's line) indicate an exact match with C.McGhee, and 1 allele mismatches with Eli McGehee and John O. McGehee. These matches indicate a definite relationship between these lines.

Z.McGee's 12 allele results indicate no relationship to any of the other current participants in this project. This haplotype bears many of the allele values shared by some in haplogroup I1a. It is recommended that this participant find cousins to join the project and try to identify the haplotype of the most distant known ancestor.

Recommended Actions: All of the tested lines should have at least two participants representing a descendancy of the oldest known brothers. If the DNA results for descendants of these brothers match then it would be reasonable to infer that their father had that same haplotype. With this information, it becomes easier to determine other relationships based on DNA results with some level of confidence. So, all participants are encouraged to find distant cousins to join the project.

McGee Family Lines by DNA
KY McGees
This is one of the many possible explanations of the McGee family relationships as determined by DNA testing. The John McGee of TN line and the James McGee of KY lines are closely related, additional test results will show whether or not this potential relationship holds for the other McGee lines.

McGee Family Lines by DNA
Barclay McGee
The John Calvin McGee, Zera McGhee, and David Magee lines match all alleles tested indicating a very close relationship.

McGehee Family Lines by DNA
McGehee Lines
This is one of several explanations of the McGehee/McGhee family relationships as determined by DNA testing.

While I have made the decision to publicly share my full DNA testing results, ancestry information, and email address, I understand and respect the concerns others might have regarding such data. Each participant in the McGee Surname DNA Project is is welcome to share as much or as little ancestry and contact information as they desire. I will gladly be the intermediate contact for those who wish to keep their identity and/or email address private. There is no requirement to disclose full ancestry, but sharing of early established genealogy will benefit all our cousins.
